Dr Ian Wilkinson, Reader in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge and honorary consultant at Cambridge University Hospitals, has been named as the Director of the Cambridge Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU).

The Cambridge Clinical Trials Unit is being created by Cambridge University Health Partners to support researchers from the four member organisations in the design and management of clinical trials.

Key deliverables for the CCTU will include:

  • Increasing recruitment of patients into trials: the target is to double the number within four years to meet DH targets - clinical research activity data will be collected and published in NHS Quality Accounts.
  • Increasing support for and quality of clinical trials: demonstrated by internal and MHRA audits, demand for the services of the CTU from researchers and the volume and quality of research outputs.
  • UK-CRC accreditation: through an application in the next round (expected 2011).

As Director of the CCTU, Dr Wilkinson will be responsible for establishing the CCTU and ensuring that the services that it offers continue to develop to meet the evolving needs of researchers, in order to enable them to reach the highest standards of clinical trials management, as required by regulators and in accordance with best practice. The CTU will facilitate and support principal investigators in the design and implementation of high quality clinical trials, and will oversee appropriate monitoring for regulatory compliance.

Dr Wilkinson took up post on 1st November 2010. He trained in General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology initially at Oxford, and then the University of Edinburgh, before taking up his current appointment in 2000. He currently holds the WE Parke’s British Heart foundation Senior Clinical Fellowship.
