Meet our first Director of The Academic Health Science System for Cambridge University Health Partners

Dr Robert Winter OBE MA MD FRCP is to be the first Director of the Academic Health Science System for Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP). Dr Winter has an extensive track record in strategic leadership within the health service and joins CUHP from his post as Medical Director of NHS East of England and National Clinical Director for Respiratory Disease at the Department of Health. This new role will support CUHP's plan to develop relationships with other healthcare providers in the East of England and to create a group of CUHP regional associates to work with CUHP in leading excellence in health research, education and clinical services.

"CUHP was awarded Academic Health Science Centre status in 2009 with a mission of bringing together research, education and high quality healthcare. This post is a great opportunity to lead that development and extend CUHP across a health system to include both primary care and other hospitals across the east of England" said Dr Winter.

A respiratory physician by background, Dr Winter has held a number of leadership roles including as Medical Director of Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust 2002-2008, Interim Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospitals and Trustee and Vice President of the British Lung Foundation.

"I am delighted to welcome Dr Winter to CUHP: his appointment will not only help to maximise the impact of the current partnership, but also develop relationships with a wider set of potential future partners, for mutual benefit and advancement of our surrounding healthcare system." said Professor Patrick Sissons, Executive Director of the Academic Health Science Centre.

Dr Winter will work with the four CUHP partners and their regional associates to:

  • Develop new clinical programmes and innovative healthcare pathways
  • Inform the commissioning of health services in the region and work with the emerging GP consortia to explore new opportunities for integrated services
  • Ensure that public health expertise is used to inform the work of CUHP
  • Work with the School of Clinical Medicine, and the wider University of Cambridge, to identify programmes with potential for application to healthcare, and facilitate joint working between the University and relevant clinical teams.
