Our response to the Life Sci for Growth announcement

Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP) welcomes the Government’s latest initiatives aimed at unlocking the full potential of our NHS and our research infrastructure to save lives and grow the economy.

The Cambridge life science community remains a world-leader in medical innovation, but the process of taking an idea from initial discovery, to demonstrating it works in clinical trials, to gaining regulatory approval for a wider roll-out across the NHS, still takes too long. These government initiatives should help to simplify and speed up that process, whilst also encouraging planners to tackle another significant problem that is holding innovation back, the lack of lab space available to develop ideas. Freeing up pension schemes to invest in promising science companies and funding to improve commercial clinical trials are also welcome moves.

CUHP will build on these initiatives by creating capacity within our NHS to adopt and trial innovative devices and technology ideas, helping investors get to know our local companies and entrepreneurs and supporting patients to participate in trials.

By tackling some of the obstacles to life sciences growth, a shortage of talent and lab space and barriers to innovators accessing the NHS, all the partners that make up the Cambridge life sciences ecosystem can provide significant improvements to healthcare and be a key component in delivering the Government’s science superpower ambitions.
